Exercising Your Mind

10.17.2016

Ever since I stopped being a student, it seems like my mind has started falling apart. I can’t be the only who’s noticed. I’m not as quick on the uptake when I’m calculating a discount at the store, or the tip on the restaurant check. I don’t remember new people’s names as well, and I have a hard time expressing what I know about the nation’s drug abuse fiscal burden… see? That didn’t even make sense.
Your brain stops developing sometime in your 20’s, according to most studies. The prefrontal cortex is still developing between age 18 and 25. This region controls things like impulse control, self-evaluation, focusing attention, and complex planning.
However, as soon as your brain hits peak performance, certain functions start to deteriorate. The first things to go in your late 20’s and early 30’s are spatial skills, reasoning, and speed of thought. Next up is memory; it’s harder to find connections and names and recollections.
Keeping your mind active can stave off disease, make your quality of life better, and reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. So what can you do to keep your mind fit and spry once you’re done with school, and your job requires you to do the same type of busywork day in and day out?
Read Instead of Watching TV
Studies have found that reading improves connectivity in the brain, and especially exercises your language function and your ability to process movement and sensation. However, 42% of college grads will never read another book after graduation (how heartbreaking is that!)
Other studies show that reading stimulates the brain and decreases your risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia, especially when compared with watching tv, which dramatically increases your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. The beneficial effects can also be had from word puzzles, games, and cognitively engaging activities like painting or playing an instrument. So, even if reading isn’t your thing, cultivate a hobby that will keep your mind active.

Exercise Your Body

Although we usually think that exercise is something for the body, not the mind, the truth is that you can’t isolate them from each other. The way you treat your body affects the way your mind works, and vice versa. Exercise can have an amazing effect on the brain. In fact, kids who exercise regularly get better grades, are better able to focus, think creatively, and make new connections.
Exercise continues to have an effect on our brain as we age. Exercise improves blood flow to the brain, and the ability to make new nerve cells and connections within the brain. One study showed that simply walking every day improves your ability to daydream, plan for the future, remember the past, and even the ability to plan and execute a task.
There are other ways that your body’s health affects your brain, too. Eat well, and get enough sleep in order to continue to support your brain’s health.
Try Something Completely New
We’re only recently learning how much our brains love novelty. Our brains are wired to seek out brand-new things. We actually get a dopamine hit that encourages us to explore more and find more rewards when we try something new. Novelty helps us to build new connections and learn more. We used to think that you were born with a finite amount of brain cells. But now we know that brain cells are actually created throughout our life (called neurogenesis) and neuroplasticity (the ability for your brain to actually change over time) can be cultivated by exercising your brain and trying out new things periodically.
So, continue to try out new things as you age! Travel somewhere new, take a class for a skill you’ve always wanted. Best of all, meet new people! Social connectivity keeps our brain active, staves off disease, and reduces stress.
Be Positive
One of the biggest ways to quickly age your brain and make it slower before its time is negativity and stress. Stress can dampen your memory, hamper nerve and cell growth or development. Find your own stress relief technique, like exercise, social interaction, walks in the park, daily meditation, and cultivate it as a habit of your life.

You Are Not A Dog

1.03.2014

Yesterday my friend and I were talking about getting healthy. Breaking treat addictions. And what we need to do to get in shape and take back our health. Because it seems to be a common theme for the new year. She said, "What do you reward yourself with when you don't have food?" Being a treat head and a snacker.. I feel like this is a very valid question. I used to always reward myself with food. Cleaned the house? Have some ice cream. Did all the laundry? Have a cookie. Accomplished something super awesome? Grab a cupcake. And it wasn't just me! It is something we are taught from a young age. Win your little league game? We go for pizza. Finish your dance recital? Head to DQ for Blizzards. Graduate from high school or college? Big family dinner. It is society's way of thinking. But then a friend posted a quote that has really stuck with my and I realized it was TIME TO STOP. It goes a little something like this....

So ever since that it has been me thinking out of the box. What things does a human deserve for doing something hard? Or great? Or just regular but for some reason that day it seemed super awesome? veryone will have their own version of what a reward is. It could be something that makes you look good like clothes or jewelry. Taking Back My Health

1.01.2014

Yesterday I introduced you to my word of the year. And while I am not planning to make a bunch of empty resolutions. I am going to make some open ended resolutions that can evolve and change with me as the year continues on. Over the next few days I will introduce you to the promises I have made for myself in 2014. They could be considered resolutions, but I am looking at them as promises. Because I know who I want to be, and I am DONE making excuses. I am done with the pity parties when things aren't going the way I want or when something is working better for someone else. I am promising myself that this year I will become closer, day by day, to the person I want to be.

So my first promise? To take back my health. My life has been a yo-yo of getting fit, gaining weight, back issues, fitting into clothing, needing new clothing, acne, and so on. I could take you through a lot of sob stories. About being picked on for my weight and people saying mean things about me, about having back surgery when I was in high school, about being diagnosed with PCOS... but if I did that I would also have to admit I have a serious addiction to treats. Like, it's bad. I can't stop. I would have to tell you about how sometimes I am too lazy to get back out of bed to go take my medicine, so I just skip a day. And I would have to admit that sometimes if I am about to go to the gym and my show comes on, I get so wrapped up in the TV I just skip the gym. Basically, there are things out of my control and things in my control. And I have to admit I am not controlling the things I can and I am letting things that are out of my control take control of me. Not okay.

So health is applying to more than just losing weight. I want to be healthy. I want to be strong. I want to eat right. I want to be in the right place mentally, always. I want to remember that birth control messes with hormones and conquer those crazy spells. I want to have a clear face. I want to remember to take my PCOS medicine so I don't relapse. I want to break my treat addiction. I want to get to a place where I am not second guessing the way I look. I want to feel happy about what I eat and not get sick because I want "one more". I want to take back my health. And I am going to take back my health. I think it will be a long process. But it will be worth it.

Getting a Little Dirty

6.20.2013

Get your head out of the gutter. I am only talking about the dash - the DIRTY dash that is. This is my second time running it and let me tell you. It did not disappoint. Adam, my brothers, and our friends from Heber signed up months ago to run the dash and we had been gearing up since. And when I say gearing up... I mean talking about it... because none of us really prepared by getting in shape. Our racetime was 11:40. Sadly, Adam didn't get to run because that was draft day and he was still waiting on a call (sorry, Skinny... we will run it again in September when you are back home, who's in?!) but he rode up their and hung out like a champ. So here we are right before taking off...
Looking pretty clean, right? Well that wouldn't last long. The race went a little something like this. Up the muddy hill, around the bend, across the bridge, (this is about where they guys and girls split... they were clearly in better shape) over the hay bails, through the muddy mogels, around some trees, across some sketchy bridges, more mud, more hills, more mogels, this pit of muddy water with blue tubes you had to climb... I could keep going but at this point its a blur... and then finally to the 5K finish that ends in a slip'n'slide. Just kiddding.... we did the 10K! BACK to the race and down the hill. Watch for monkey bars, a foam piggy full of things to knock you down, the mud mines - they really did explode, walls to climb over, the military net, mud, mud, mud... it is all a blur again. Finally we make it to the slip'n'slide - for reals this time - and the 10K is nearly done. I got a little too much speed and almost died at the end. Then down the hill and through a rock filled water mud pit that gave me more scrapes than the whole raced combined - then the FINISH!

Luckily we found the guys quickly. We stood in line. We got some photos taken. We got our bananas and snacks. Found Adam - I was so happy to hear he had been drafted! Tested a sports drink from a vendor. And then to the ice cold showers. So cold I got a brain freeze from the water on my head. Oh what a feeling. But I would recommend it. Not the shower... the shower sucked. But I am a cheapskate and I would take ice cold water over a $6 warm shower. I would recommend the Dirty Dash. And I will be doing it again. But next time I will make sure Adam can run it with me - because I like him best.

Revolt Fitness

5.06.2013

Time to be honest. About me. About my body.

If you follow my blog, twitter, or insta regularly you know that I eat out. I eat treats. I don't manage my portions. I do what my heart wants. And I don't do what my body needs even more. My fitness has always been a struggle. I don't care if I am a size 2. I don't care if I can fit into those white skinny jeans and look like a model. I don't care if I am buying a size "L". But I do care about being healthy. My husband deserves a healthy wife. And my kids will deserve a healthy mom. So it isn't about loosing pounds and pounds, it is about learning to maintain and live healthy.
Adam and I have been discussing weight and what not a lot lately. Mostly because since our wedding I have gained more than I care to admit. I am probably back to my heaviest weight at this point. Partly because I am done with pageants, I am not dieting for swimsuit competition or a wedding gown. I work full time and am always "too tired" -my excuse- to work out in the evening. And the other part comes from my PCOS weight gain. I didn't know I had PCOS until I had already gained and gained from it. And then once my levels had evened out I stopped taking my medicine, like two months before our wedding. Bad idea. Once my body figured it out, I gained and gained. Luckily, I realized the symptoms coming back and went to the doctor to get my hormone levels checked.... but that doesn't answer to the treats and not working out part of my lifestyle.

It also doesn't help me any that my husband can eat for days and still loose weight. When I see him eating burritos, I want some. When I see him eating chips, I want some. When I see him eating ice cream, I want some. Why doesn't he ever eat vegetables?!

1/4 PCOS without medicine + 1/2 lack of treat self control + 1/4 work out laziness = one unhealthy Deidre

And I have been thinking and thinking about how I could get back to the Miss Idaho swimsuit bod. And then I got an email from Revolt Fitness. I've been asked to join a group of bloggers for a program full of meal plans and work outs. As well as the support and love from everyone involved. So. I am doing it. Because something my Dad said to me really stuck, "Adam deserves a healthy wife." And Adam does because I want to be around forever. And I want to get healthy now so my kids don't have to watch their mom struggle with weight and fall into the same trap.... There should be some before photos here. But they got lost in the schedule when I decided to surprise Adam in CA.

Get ready to watch my progress every Friday! And don't hesitate to ask me questions about my journey.

Love,
Deidre
