An AZ Weekend

10.11.2013

It was a quick trip. But I must say, I think I will like Arizona. I learned that you can tell a lot about a state by it's highway. Arizona has a clean highway, cleaner than I thought it would. And the drivers seem relatively reasonable, unlike some states I have lived in. The whole trip started with a rental car drive to go pick up Adam... and in those first few moments on the road I knew I could be happy living there someday.

Our weekend started with a trip to the mall. Apparently there were some awesome sales that Adam wanted me to hit up. So I did. Because he told me I "had to get something"... okay, okay. Don't twist my arm! He said he has been there at least once a week, if not three or four times, because that is what his teammates like to do. And he wasn't lying. Within 30 minutes of being there we ran into some fellow Diamondback guys.

After the mall it was time to check in to the hotel. Change up. And head out for dinner and the game.

Adam loves driving rental cars. And I love Adam driving any car. As long as I get to sit next to him. He doesn't love me taking his photo though... Ha. We were going to grab dinner downtown so we went to the first place that looked fun. And we lucked out with it being Arizona Restaurant Week and the place we picked was participating! So we got to try out a delicious three course meal. The desserts were to die for. Salted caramel pudding, everyone. You must try it.

Then after dinner a quick walk back to Chase Field (sadly we missed the opening of the roof) to catch the Diamondbacks in action! My first MLB game. I cannot wait until Adam is playing there. And I will eat one million ballpark pretzels. Mark my words. We had pretty good seats because Adam's high school teammate it a big leaguer and he hooked us up! Thanks bro.

Then home and to bed because Adam had practice at 8 AM the next morning. And I was a sleepy goose. So Adam went to practice and I slept in and then watched ESPN until he got home. Winning. After that it was brunch at Paradise, walking around a different mall, swinging by his team hotel to pick up a gift card and his friend Steve, a tour of the JW Marriott Desert Ridge (which is INCREDIBLE), then more mall, and then dropping Steve back at the hotel. Adam and I were going to try and go to a movie, but decided to call it a night. So we grabbed some Sprinkles Cupcakes because I was dying to try them and headed home to relax and get Adam caught up on Pretty Little Liars.

Then off to bed around 11PM so I could get up and catch an EARLY flight home. Which included a small panic attack because I needed to return the rental car to a different airport than I was flying out of. Do you think I will ever learn to read fine print? Luckily Adam is a champ and took care of it all for me. And now I am home in Utah. And Adam is too, because while I was in AZ he got the good news he was cleared to come home! Which was the VERY best birthday gift I could have EVER ever in my whole life asked for. Home is wherever Adam is. And I am looking forward to when we make Arizona our home.

Adam in Orem

9.06.2013

It's a little late. But at least it is going up! Last week I was so blessed to have Adam in Utah. It was a crazy four days. Starting with meeting Adam's brother for the first time without him even there. Then Adam rolling in at 4 AM on Saturday. Saturday was a whirlwind! Not only did Adam's parents and brothers come into town. But all of my family made an appearance in Utah Valley to cheer for Adam. That makes two sets of parents, four brothers, two sisters-in-law, one aunt and uncle, five nephews, and one niece with both of our families that came to watch. Then add in all of Adam's former teammates, a few of his coaches, our bishop and his family, and friends. All I can say... is we are so lucky for the support we have! Saturday was so perfect.
Then Sunday Adam got to come to sacrament meeting with my before he had to be at the field. That night his family took off and we enjoyed a steak dinner at our home. Monday was just a good old regular day with a lunch date and then a baseball game. Followed by half price appetizers at Applebees with Drew and Madi... we really miss hanging out with them. And then Tuesday was one last day together, a lunch date, I took an hour extra from work to hang out with Adam, and one more baseball game... but the baseball game was cancelled after the third inning because it was POURING rain. So much that they couldn't even get the tarp on. Cray-zee. But I was okay with that.. because that meant an extra hour hanging out with Adam until the decision to cancel was made. Then a little In-n-Out... and then Adam was out.
Sadly, Adam got injured in Orem... so he spent the last week in Arizona with the doctors. But they say things are okay. Just a tired arm that needs a little TLC. He is home in Utah for five days, and then he heads back to the training facility in Scottsdale. He will be spending the next 6 weeks in Arizona at rehab starting on Monday. But he obviously impressed someone before that injury because he was announced an All Star for the Pioneer League that he played in this summer.

Paper Anniversary || Part Two

8.30.2013

Like I said, our anniversary was spent with a lot of baseball. I loved being at the field with Adam. I got to watch three games in Montana, and I met a lot of wonderful people while I was there. Two of the games Adam was in the chairs charting and one of them he started! It was perfect timing. I love seeing Adam pitch. You can just tell how dedicated he is.

Adam is such a wonderful role model. He has made a lot of friends on his team and with the fans because of his friendly personality and his example. Fans are always coming to talk to him after the game. People just gravitate to Adam. It is so impressive. I feel very lucky to have married a man that is hard working in his sport, in his relationships, and in his example.

It was so wonderful to meet his teammates and the people that work at field and have become Adam's family. I loved meeting the fans. There are three couples with season tickets, and I sat by them ever single night. They are a hoot. They told me that they thought Adam looked like Buddy Holly the first night. the next night they brought him a Buddy Holly CD, Buddy's bio, and a headshot of him that said "Adam Miller AKA Buddy Holly". And the last night they talked the people that run the press box into playing a Buddy Holly song for Adam's walkout. It was so funny. But it might have helped Adam and I pick our new Halloween costume from Wezer's song Buddy Holly... Buddy Holly and Mary Tyler Moore! Oh, and they told me I look like Brad Paisley's wife.

Famous Adam

7.26.2013

I know I already talked about Adam this week... but I am just so darn proud of him! Yesterday he was featured in The Missoulian, which is the newspaper where his current team is located. This baseball road has been a long and bumpy one. We've had awesome games, we've had mediocre games, we've had games we wish would just disappear, we've been angry, sad, and happy, we've had moments of success and failure, we've had more tears - from me - than I ever thought possible in baseball, and most of all we've had a great time learning from everything we have encountered.

Adam has come a long way in baseball. After a two year mission, two years without even seeing a baseball, he came back ready to play but had a more difficult time getting his control back than we thought. From 2012 at BYU to 2013 at BYU to 2013 with the Missoula Osprey he has worked hard and he has improved. I am so proud of him. I'm not only proud of Adam for his hard work in baseball, but I admire him for making a choice to turn down the draft in high school to go to on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Miller knew he wanted to serve as a Mormon missionary even before professional baseball became a possibility. But a two-year rite of passage in the LDS community meant walking away from the game just as scouts starting taking notice of the California native.

Unfortunate timing perhaps, Miller thought, but his path was never in doubt.

“I’d kind of made a commitment before I left to completely dedicate myself to what I was going to do down there, and I knew I’d receive blessings for doing so,” said Miller, who left school following his freshman year. “Baseball is something that I loved, but I knew if I completely cut myself loose from baseball, when I came back it was going to be there in greater abundance for me. And it’s definitely turned out that way.”

And I appreciate him for turning down the draft last year to come back to BYU to improve and be with his team. And on top of that, I appreciate him turning it down last year so we could get married. Because I really love him. Adam is the epitome of dedication and hard work, in everything he does. He makes me a better person. He is a wonderful example of the gospel to everyone he meets. He makes whoever he is around feel comfortable and he is always making people laugh. He is a gentleman and knows the importance of respect. He is my other half... in fact, he is my better half.
