General Conference

This weekend is something I have been looking forward to for a long time. For as long as I can remember, my birthday always went hand in hand with General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. When I was younger that meant Buffalo Chips for breakfast, “going to church” in my pajamas, and getting to sit on a couch rather than in a pew. But as I got older it meant an opportunity to hear counsel from a living prophet and the apostles of the church. Listening to talks, experiences and guidance from the men and the women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, men and women that I have looked up to so dearly. And amazingly, every conference there seems to be at least one talk, if not all of them from a session, that seems to be completely directed towards me. Towards the questions I have, the trails I am facing, and the things going on in my life. I know, without a shadow of doubt, in those moments that these men and women are called of God. I know that their talks are inspired by my Heavenly Father. And I know that they are listening to the words He needs them to say for his sons and daughters, for me and for you. I am so grateful to be a member of a church that has modern day prophets and modern day revelation, so that I can learn and grow and become closer to my Heavenly Father in these latter days. And I am grateful for General Conference as it comes every year to give me the guidance and answers I have been praying for.

What is General Conference? General conference is a semiannual gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During general conference weekend, Church members and others gather worldwide in a series of two-hour sessions to receive inspiration and instruction from Church leaders.

Why does the LDS Church hold General Conference twice a year? The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints hold a General Conference twice a year, once in April and once in October, as an opportunity for members to join together and listen to a prophets voice. This has been part of the church since 1830. Every week members can go to church to hear from local leaders and members of their ward family, but twice a year we can all come together to listen to words from a living prophet, a mouth piece from God.

How can I watch or listen to General Conference? You can watch live or listen live directly on lds.org. This year there will be 5 different sessions broadcast to the public. The General Women’s Session was broadcast last week on Saturday September 24th at 6:00pm MDT. Priesthood Meeting will be broadcast October 1st at 6:00pm MDT. General Conference will be broadcast October 1st and 2nd at 10:00am and 2:00pm MDT.

When does the President of the church speak? For the October 2016 conference, the President of the Church, Thomas S. Monson, will be speaking during the Sunday morning session at 10:00 a.m. MDT on October 2nd – but there are other opportunities to hear him speak throughout other sessions as he conducts and gives reports.

Does General Conference come in only English? Conference is translated into 92 different languages for members and investigators around the world.

Is there a way to get involved or see snippets from General Conference on social media? Members of the church will be tweeting quotes and thoughts from conference all week by using #ldsconf.

Will the talks shared at General Conference be available after it is done? Within 24 hours the talks begin to be available online. Over the following 6 weeks they are put into publication in the Ensign, a church magazine, Mormon Channel, DVD, Audio CDs, iTunes, and so many other places. The talks are translated into over 70 languages for people around the world. There is also an archive of past General Conference for anyone to read.

Are there large meetings in addition to General Conference? Most members of the LDS church attend church on a weekly basis, but in addition to the general conference meetings there is a General Relief Society, Young Women, and Priesthood broadcast. In those meetings talks are designed and inspired to reach those specific groups. These talks will also be available online.

A Savior is Born

On this Christmas Day. If you remember nothing else from the day, remember the feeling you felt when you thanked Jesus Christ for all He did. For me, for you, for all of us. Presents, gifts, treats, and all of the material things that come from Christmas set aside. Take time to thank Jesus Christ and remember why did is today. And why we celebrate. Unto all of us a Savior is born.

Why We Need a Savior

Every year The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints does a Christmas campaign. This year the whole focus was around "A Savior is Born". Sometimes there is so much focus around the gifts and the goodies of the season, but there is so much more than that. Christmas is about our Savior and all He did for us. And sometimes that is easy to forget - with all the shine and sparkle around us. It is easy to forget Him and forget all He did for us. So this year, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints decided to remind us all - believers and non believers - as to why we need a Savior.

I know, with my whole heart, that He lived. That He lived and died for me and for you and for all of us. He paid the ultimate price so that we, as brother and sisters, could live again with our Father in heaven. And I am forever grateful for what our Savior did. That I can get through the pain, that I can push past my trails, and there is so much hope on the other side of every mountain I have to climb. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior. And like I said, sometimes it is easy to forget... but as we are entering Christmas week we cannot forget. Let us try to emulate Him and all He did for us. Let us be charitable. Let us be giving. Let us be compassionate. And let us praise our Savior. Merry Christmas. And thank you to a loving brother, Jesus Christ.

Modesty Extends Beyond Clothing

A while ago I wrote about my choice to be modesty - and since then the concept of modesty has been on my mind. For years and years the Mormon culture has been linked to modesty – long shorts, one piece swimsuits, sleeves, and so on. Sometimes we are asked to explain why modesty is important and sometimes we must defend our clothing choices in a constantly changing world. But the principle of modesty still stands because it is timeless and it applies to all stages of life. It is a principle given by God that applies to men and women, sons and daughters – for all times. But being modest extends beyond the clothing you wear. It is also in your attitude and in your reverence to the Lord.

Modesty shows humility. The willingness of a modest man or woman shows that they are willing to set aside the worldly fashion trends, styles, and pride to become fully dedicated to something that the Lord has said is important. In Doctrine and Covenants 42:40 the idea of humility and modesty is continued, “Thou shalt not be proud in thy heart; let all thy garments be plain.” Does the phrase “plain garments” mean we cannot have stylish and trendy clothing? No. It means that that we dress properly for the occasion and we do not become consumed with brand names or the hottest fashion.

Modesty shows dedication and preparation. Modesty in dress and appearance and in thought and behavior will help prepare us to make and keep sacred temple covenants. Our modesty shows our dedication to the gospel by making the right choices to help us prepare for the temple. Modesty shows strength and courage. It can be difficult to remain modest as shorts are getting shorter, tops are getting tighter, and sleeves are being removed left and right. By being modest we are showing are strength to the Lord and to those that are curious about the Church. Remaining modest through the constant fashion trend changes shows our ability to stand up for what we believe is important. Strong and courageous children of God all working towards the same goal.

Modesty shows reverence to the Lord. The way we dress whether at church meetings or with our friends will show God how we value the body he gave us. Our bodies are often referred to as temples – which are the most sacred of buildings. How do we treat our temple? How do we protect our temple? Show respect for the Lord and for yourself by dressing appropriately for Church meetings and activities, whether they are on Sunday or during the week.

Modesty also offers the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, a foundation to teach our own children on the importance of appearance, and the ability to “stand as witnesses of God at all times”.

There are many blessings that come from being modest in your dress and in your attitude, and one of those blessings is an increase in confidence. When I dress modestly, I don’t think about pulling and tugging clothing to make sure I am covered properly. I am more confident in what I wear. When I dress modestly, I can focus on the people I meet, what they are saying, and the conversations we are having. I am more confident in my communication. When I dress modestly, I know I am sharing an outward appearance of drive and determination and that my clothes do not define me, but my words and my accomplishments become the focal point. I am more confident in the woman I am.

So while people will often ask why we choose to dress modestly – the principle of modesty will extend beyond clothing and appearance. Modesty becomes part of your attitude, your reverence to the lord, and your confidence. And those things are more important than any piece of clothing.

General Conference 2015

Every six months I touch on the same topic. Some of you will breeze right by it, but maybe for one of you it will be something you are interested in hearing about. If you haven't picked up on it yet - I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. To put it in simpler terms for most people, I am Mormon. And every six months my church holds a General Conference. It is an opportunity for members of the church, and non-member for that matter, to all hear directly from the Prophet, the Apostles, and the leaders of the Church. Men and women alike speak in the language of their choice, mostly English, to share the messages they have felt inspired to speak on.



The thing I love about general conference is that religious concepts are principles are tied into real life questions. Whether you are LDS or not, there is something that can apply to the life situation you are in. You just have to be willing to tune in. You can watch on your computer, on the TV, or just listen on the radio. The other thing I love also is that it is an opportunity for people that have always wondered about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but haven't wanted to come to church or talk to the missionaries, get a first hand experience of what our church believes and practices without having to feel bombarded with missionaries and members.

General Conference

I'm not shy about my beliefs. You can learn all about them by clicking the "we believe" button above. I've shared my feelings on the gospel, my testimony, and the things I have learned through my experiences many times on this blog. Still today I am learning more about the gospel and I am learning more about myself in the gospel. This weekend marks a special weekend in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is general conference weekend. A weekend in which there are 4 sessions for all members of the church and 1 session for the priesthood holders to tune in and listen to a prophet and the apostles speak. And not just here in the U.S. Everywhere. It is translated into 92 different languages so these messages can be shared with everyone!

And beyond that, some members in other countries save up for years just to get a chance to come to America and hear the good word live from the conference center. A lot of foreign members make a big trip out of it. Touring the temple grounds, taking in the sites around Salt Lake, and spending time where the Saints established a home. One of the member families from Adam's mission in Mexico is here for conference. And Adam was lucky enough to speak to them once he found out they were here so he could invite them to his team's baseball game Thursday. They said yes, so Adam worked to get them all free tickets and free BYU shirts. We all talked, I mostly just listened because only the Father spoke solid English, for about an hour after the game. Watching Adam speak in Spanish to this member family was so incredible. I could see the love he had for not only them, but for his mission. And for that brief moment I got a glimpse into the two years previous to us meeting, to see the things that made him the man he is today. It was such a humbling moment in my life. And I am truly grateful for Adam and the work he put in as a missionary. It was a great reminder of one of the many reasons I love and admire him. But, the thing about it, is that isn't just Adam's experience. Missionaries are all over the world building those relationships with members, converts, and investigators in their area... and that is what makes it beautiful!
